Ice Dub Z-Wing Caddis Tying Instructions

This fly a great fly created by a great tyer (Mike Mercer).  If fishing seems a little slow during the "dog days" this summer give this fly a try.  It works great as a dropper below a hopper or fat albert.

Ice Dub Z-Wing Caddis - Trout Fly

Hook: TMC 2487 #14-18
Thread: Black 6/0 Uni
Bead: Copper Tungsten Bead
Rib: Chartreuse Wire (Small)
Shellback: Turkey Tail Feather
Body: Caddis Green Ice Dub
Wing Buds: Cream Antron Yarn
Thorax: Black Peacock Ice Dub

Step 1: Tie in chartreuse wire.

Step 2: Tie in turkey tail.

Step 3: Dub body.

Step 4: Pull turkey feather forward and tie off.

Step 5: Clip turkey and rib body.
Step 6: Tie in antron on one side of fly.  This is a view from the top of the fly.

Step 7: Fold antron to opposite side of body and tie off.

Step 8: Dub thorax.

Step 9: Clip zelon.

Finished fly.

I think olive is my best color for this fly but it works in tan as well.  A chartreuse version could be effective too but I haven't tried one.  This is an easy tie and when the fish are on caddis it almost should be illegal.
