Top 5 Uinta Mountain Lake Flies

If you spend much time in the backcountry you'll appreciate the value of versatility in fly selection. When I am fishing in high country lakes it seems I go back to the same patterns over and over again. Here is a list of my top five flies for fishing the high mountain lakes of the Uintas here in Utah but the list will prove worthy anywhere in the high country. #1 - Renegade The renegade can be fished dry or wet. Is it a beetle, an ant, a caddis, a nymph??? Who cares, the fish don't so neither do I. #2 - Flying Ant This is one of the staples of dry fly action in the mountains. Hoppers and not present in the numbers when you get up around 10,000 feet but ants are everywhere. When a hatch of flying ants is happening expect some of the best fishing of the season. CDC Captive Dun Tying Instructions

Rene Harrop is pretty much a badass when it comes to developing flies for selective trout. This one has always worked great for me. I tied up a bunch for a trip on the South Fork in late August. I plan on selling these flies to my buddies mid-hatch for $5 a piece....except Jay he has to pay $10. CDC Captive Dun - Mahogany Dun Hook: TMC 100 #16 Thread: 8/0 Rusty Brown Uni Tail: Mallard Dyed Woodduck More Tail: Amber Antron Body: Mahogany Turkey Biot Wingcase: Natural Dun CDC Thorax: Dark Hare's Ear Dubbing Step 1: Tie in woodduck tail Step 2: Tie in antron it should be about half as long as the woodduck. Step 3: Tie in and wrap turkey biot. Hit the thread with head cement before you wrap it for durability. Step 4: Tie in a clump of cdc fibers. Step 5: Dub thorax. This is a simple fly that works great on the Green in Utah. I am not sure why ginger is such a great streamer color there and I don't even really care as long as it puts fish in the boat. I've had good luck with it on the lower Henry's Fork in the fall too so give it a try wherever you fish. This fly is just a woolly bugger with brass eyes. You could tie it in any color but then you'd have to change the name. Goldilocks - Streamer Hook: TMC 5263 #6 Eyes: Medium Brass Eyes Tail: Tan Marabou Flash: Copper Krystal Flash Rib (optional): Copper Wire Hackle: Ginger Schlappen Body: Medium Tan Chenille When you pick out the marabou for the tail try and get one with thick fibers instead of longer, slender fibers.
