Top 5 Uinta Mountain Lake Flies

If you spend much time in the backcountry you'll appreciate the value of versatility in fly selection. When I am fishing in high country lakes it seems I go back to the same patterns over and over again. Here is a list of my top five flies for fishing the high mountain lakes of the Uintas here in Utah but the list will prove worthy anywhere in the high country. #1 - Renegade The renegade can be fished dry or wet. Is it a beetle, an ant, a caddis, a nymph??? Who cares, the fish don't so neither do I. #2 - Flying Ant This is one of the staples of dry fly action in the mountains. Hoppers and not present in the numbers when you get up around 10,000 feet but ants are everywhere. When a hatch of flying ants is happening expect some of the best fishing of the season. Hogan's Good and Plenty Caddis Pupa

This caddis pupa has become one of my favorite dropper flies throughout the summer. It is an easy tie. I am not 100% how much my version differs from Hogan Brown's original but it work well on the Provo, Weber, and South Fork. I tie it in green and amber. Good n' Plenty - Trout Fly Hook: TMC 2487 #12-18 Thread: Uni 6/0 Olive Bead: Black Tungsten Rib: Chartreuse Holo Tinsel Body: Mercer's Buggy Dubbing Legs: Black Pheasant Tail Wing: Light Blue or Pearl Krystal Flash Collar: Black Ostrich Herl Step 1: Slide bead on hook. Step 2: Tie in holo tinsel for rib. You could use chartreuse wire as well. Step 3: Dub tapered body. Step 4: Rib body with tinsel. Step 5: Tie in four pheasant tails on far side of hook. When The Gore-Tex Fails

I almost didn't go grouse hunting. I was pulling onto the interstate and thinking it is supposed to rain and snow and it is the opening day of rifle elk season. Chukar hunting would have been a better choice as there is less brush and less brush means less wetness... but hey, that is why they make Gore-Tex. It didn't take long for Zephyr to get his first point. He came in above the bird with a solid point. The blue was a hard flusher and didn't give me any kind of real shot. I always love the first snows of the season. Today's was a wet one but hey remember the Gore-Tex thing.... Soon I began to feel that cold moist feeling in my left boot. Then upon taking off my glove I noticed the dampness inside. Yup both the gloves and the boots gave up their waterproofness today.
